This publication was issued in December 1993 in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Academy's closure. This is a 1903 limited (56/250) self-published edition of The Music of the Ephrata Cloister Also Conrad Beissel's Treatise on Music (as set forth in a Preface to the "Turtel Taube" of 1747). Amplified with Facsimile Reproduction of Parts of the Text and some Original Ephrata Music. Julius Friedrich Sachse authored and published this version, reprinted from Volume 12 of the Proceedings of the Pennsylvania-German Society. 108 pp. including 5 b&w plates with tissue guards, 38 b&w illustrations, and 40+ samples of music and title pages. Sasche details the hymnology of the Ephrata Cloister, and the Seventh Day Baptist (Dunkard) sect, an important 18th century religious community. Sasche shows how the musical influence of the Cloister gradually reached the Shenandoah Valley, the Alleghenies and even New England. Particular attention is paid to the Turtel Taube which contains 277 hymns and was the first hymn book produced at the Cloister and may be the earliest Western hymnal containing only original compositions. Beissel's theory of harmony is also discussed at some length.
