David’s first exposure to book collecting came through his father’s passion for the writings of H.P. Lovecraft and the emerging Arkham House Press. David prizes a collection of letters from August Derleth ‑ head of Arkham House and himself an author - to his father responding to questions concerning orders, future publications, and catalogs.

Brick path

Although book collecting has always been a large part of his life, it wasn’t until a massive downsizing at his job in the transportation industry and subsequent career testing that he discovered his skills and interests were best suited as a librarian. Books, it seemed, was his calling.

Eager to pursue the business of bookselling, David met with dealers and store owners before taking over for a retiring book dealer. In 2011, with the basic online infrastructure already built and a passion for bookselling and business ownership, Adamstown Books was born.

What sets us apart from other antiquarian bookstores? Our resources.

We pride ourselves on the connections, sources, and relationships we’ve formed through bookselling.

Actively selling in the antiques and collectibles community in “America’s Antiques Capital” has allowed us to find titles with limited or no online availability. Approximately 80% of our initial listings are titles without an ISBN due to their age, are private printings, and/or were issued as staple-bound ephemera. Our wide array of sources in our geographic area, along with our presence at antique cooperatives, allows us to scout for uncommon subjects and titles.

Similarly, our distinct partnership with the historic Lancaster Theological Seminary has provided us with a retail setting in Downtown Lancaster. This opportunity has enabled us to develop relationships with readers and collectors interested in religious and theological titles as well as capture the historical presence of diverse religious influences that have shaped our region, including Quaker, German Reformed, and Anabaptist.

With a growing inventory in both our retail store and online listings, we’re happy to feature a wide selection of subjects, including the American Civil War, Pennsylvania History, Vintage Children’s, Literature, and much more!
