Detailed bibliography of 82 important manuscripts housed in four collections : the American Philosophical Society, the Academy of Sciences, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and the Library Company of Philadelphia. American Philosophical Society Library Publication No. 15, 140 pp. There is a note in ink on the front free end paper from the previous owner that this was obtained at a conference, "Surveying the Record : American Scientific Exploration to 1900", held at the American Philosophical Society in March 1997. In addition to the Lewis & Clark Expedition, and similar travel manuscripts, there are a lot of state geological surveys included. Some especially interesting documents detailed include Admiral Perry's Japan Expedition, and two Arctic expeditions. Each listing contains a brief description of the trip/survey and short biographies of their leaders. Book Condition : Very Good; former owner's name and note on front free end paper, margin notes on 3 pages; cover corner curling; a few spots on text block and rear cover.
